Hi guys,
Thanks for reading the Krav Maga Academy Scotland blog. I want to say a few words on the other vital components of good self defence,... tactical thinking and awareness. As you all know, physical aggression and technical proficiency are an essential part of a good self defence skill set. However, what we will soon be talking about and looking at much more in class are rational, defensive (tactical) thinking and an overall increased sense of awareness. we have touched on this only slightly up to now.
The physical techniques and principles we work on are only part of our training. We will also train our minds to think tactically in a given situation. This means from first sensing a potential problem right through all the recognised stages of a confrontation:
- Pre - confrontation
- pre - fight
- fight
- post - fight
We must be aware of and quickly process all the relevant information we can gather relating to our environment , our opponents etc. and use this info. to determine our options and make the appropriate decisions at all of above stages. We don't want to be just reacting to what is 'happening' to us. This is no different from becoming the aggressor in the physical techniques in order to gain an advantage and some control. Good tactical thinking gives us a psychological AND physical advantage. it means we are making decisions to our advantage even before the 'pre fight 'stage. Examples would be.....to know where our exits are in a given area.....be aware of what common objects we have on our person and how we can use them should a situation arise.....etc, etc.
Over the coming months we will be training at different venues, locations, and in different enviroments and conditions. This will not only help develop our ability to adapt our techniques and combatives etc. but will also make us think about our tactical decisions. All helping us to have as much control over a situation as possible.
Remember guys, good krav maga training and a good krav maga instructor should expand and develop ALL the knowledge and skills required to deal with a threat situation, namely:
- The theory behind human confrontation
- strategy and tactics to deal with stressful/threat situations
- The effects of and the ability to manage the psychological, physical, emotional and mental effects of a situation
- The technical skills required
- Improve the physical condition of trainees
Up to now in class, we have touched on many of these subjects. Everybody at Krav Maga Academy Scotland has made excellent progress and everyone is thinking much more tactically already. This coupled with the obvious physical and technical improvements is great to see.
We will continue to develop all the above areas in order to make you all more capable and well rounded krav maga self defence practitioners who are able to deal with a variety of complex and challenging situations. This is just some of what seperates Krav maga from the rest! see you all on the class!
Adam
